Oriol Romeu’s time at Barcelona has seemingly come to an end after one season as the veteran holding midfielder is set to return to his former club Girona on a season-long loan deal agreed by the two clubs on Friday, according to multiple reports from Catalan media and transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.
Barça confirmed in a tweet that Romeu has already left the team’s camp in the United States and will travel back to Catalonia to complete his departure from the Blaugrana and his return to Girona, where he enjoyed great success before joining Barça last summer and failing to secure a regular role in the first team.
Romeu had been linked with a return to Girona since January, but the departure of Xavi Hernández and the arrival of Hansi Flick led to speculation that the 32-year-old could end up staying at Barça due to the change of managers, but Flick has already made the decision to allow Oriol to leave after three weeks of training and a couple of preseason friendlies.
The official announcement of Romeu’s departure should come some time this weekend, the reports say, and Oriol will be Girona’s immediate replacement for Aleix García who joined Bayer Leverkusen earlier this summer.
